Known since ancient times as protection for the warrior's body, it was only perfected in the Middle Ages. In fact, it reappeared in Europe in the 11th century, remaining the knight's main defensive armament until the end of the 13th century. Easy to wear, flexible enough not to hinder movement, it also provided good protection against sword blows, while its effectiveness decreased against bludgeoning weapons and against arrow and dart tips.
