Front/back ruff in iron.
The gorget was originally a steel or leather collar designed to protect the throat. It was part of the armor and was used as protection against sword blows or other non-throwing weapons. Subsequently, particularly from the eighteenth century onwards, the gorget became an ornamental accessory used as a symbol on military uniforms.
