ROMAN RECTANGULAR SHIELD SCUTUM DUORA EUROPOS (I6718/L.09)

Roman legionary shield of rectangular shape introduced starting from the late 1st century AD and in use until around the 3rd century. It was made with multiple layers of wood glued together and covered in leather with the edges reinforced in bronze. The central boss protecting the handle was also made of the same material. Finally, the outer layer was made of fabric, painted with different colors and symbols depending on the unit it represented. The Doura Europos shield owes its name to the Syrian city where it was found. Dating from the 3rd century and richly decorated, it is thought to have been used for ceremonial purposes.
