The bankai is the second and last stage (the most powerful one) that can be reached by a Zanpakuto of a shinigami. The bankai, Tensa Zangetsu reduces the dimensions of the sword to those of a common katana, completely black and with a hilt in the shape of manji (swastika, Buddhist symbol of the sun).
